The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has admitted the peculiar security challenges bedeviling some communities across Zamfara State as the 2027 general elections is fast approaching.l
This was pronounced by the honorable Resident Commissioner INEC Zamfara State, Dr. Mahmuda Isah during stakeholders meeting on Wednesday at the Commission’s headquarters in Gusau, saying, as 2027 General Elections is approaching, the Commission is fully conscious of the enormous responsibilities entrusted to it by the Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2026.
Dr. Mahmuda said the Commission recognizes the peculiar security challenges confronting some communities in Zamfara State, explaining that INEC will continue to work closely with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to identify electoral risks, assess their implications and develop appropriate mitigation measures within the framework of the law.
According to the Commissioner, the safety of voters, electoral personnel, election materials and electoral facilities remains a critical consideration in our planning and implementation strategies.
Dr. Mahmuda further explained that, the INEC’s preparations focus on voter register management and PVC collection, assessment of Polling Units and electoral facilities, deployment of personnel, materials and technology, personnel training, voter education, security risk assessment and mitigation, stakeholder engagement, and compliance with the approved electoral timetable.
“The Commission’s constitutional independence and impartiality remain paramount. Our engagement with stakeholders is intended to strengthen electoral administration and public confidence without compromising our neutrality.
“As of the 2023 General Elections, Zamfara State recorded 1,952,060 registered voters. Furthermore, the Continuous Voter Registration exercise recorded 313,115 registrations as of August 2026, representing approximately 16.04% of the 2023 registered-voter figure.
“These figures underscore the importance of sustained voter mobilisation, effective public enlightenment and the need to maintain an accurate, credible and inclusive Register of Voters. Registration records will continue to undergo the necessary verification and validation processes in accordance with the law and approved procedures.
“In terms of electoral administration, Zamfara State comprises 14 Local Government Areas, 147 Registration Areas (Electoral Wards), 3,529 Polling Units, 3 Senatorial Districts, 7 Federal Constituencies and 24 State Assembly Constituencies.
“With an average of approximately 553 registered voters per Polling Unit, based on the supplied 2023 figure, these statistics demonstrate the considerable logistical, administrative and security responsibilities involved in conducting elections across the State.
“Consequently, successful conduct of the 2027 General Elections will require meticulous planning, efficient resource deployment, effective security coordination, continuous voter education and active cooperation of all stakeholders”, Dr. Mahmuda emphasized.
