From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has expressed optimism that Nigeria’s current security challenges will soon be overcome.

He made this statement at the Depot of the Nigerian Army Centenary Celebration and the 87th Regular Recruits Intake Passing Out Parade held at the RSM Hama Kim Parade Ground, Depot NA, Zaria.

General Musa commended the Nigerian Army’s efforts in addressing security threats, stating, “The Nigerian Army has achieved great feats in tackling these security threats, and they will continue to work tirelessly to defend our country and protect the good citizens of Nigeria.”

Reflecting on his previous service as Commandant of the Depot, he said, “Having served before as Commandant, I am aware of the rigorous training you were subjected to and the endurance instilled in you.”

He highlighted the significance of the event, noting, “Today marks yet another milestone in the history of Depot Nigerian Army as we celebrate 100 years of its existence.”

He further emphasized that the occasion not only commemorates the institution’s achievements but also recognizes the dedication of Army Headquarters, past and present Commandants, staff, and instructors.

“This occasion is a testament to your commitment to excellence, discipline, and service to our great nation,” he said. “As the Chief of Defence Staff, I am proud to see the Nigerian Army continue to thrive and grow.”

General Musa also noted the Depot’s critical role in shaping the Army’s manpower, stating, “Since its inception in 1924, the Depot Nigerian Army has continuously molded able-bodied young Nigerians into well-trained soldiers to meet the manpower requirements of the Nigerian Army.”

He underscored the importance of this role in light of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.

He praised the institution’s commitment to professional training aligned with the Armed Forces’ constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing, “This aptly resonates with my leadership concept, which is to nurture a professional Armed Forces of Nigeria that is people-centric, capable of meeting its constitutional responsibilities in a joint and collaborative environment.”
General Musa highlighted the evolving nature of training at the depot, stating, “Over the years, this institution has continued to evolve innovative ways of improving the standards in the training of personnel for the Nigerian Army.”
He noted that the effectiveness of this training is evident in the soldiers’ robust fighting spirit in various theatres of operation, adding, “This realistic and result-orientated training is evident by the robust fighting spirit displayed by our soldiers.”
Having witnessed an excellent display of drill on this parade ground today and received reports of your outstanding performances in various aspects of training, I am confident that you have acquired the fundamental skills required to become exemplary soldiers.
To the passing-out recruits of the 87th Regular Intake, congratulations! Today marks the culmination of months of rigorous training.
“You have chosen a path paved with challenges, but one that will ultimately lead to great fulfillment and pride. Your perseverance and dedication during your period of training have brought you to this remarkable day,” General Musa stated.
He reminded them of the importance of the oath of allegiance they took, emphasizing, “The oath of allegiance administered to you is not mere words; it defines the essence of the uniform you wear. You are now part of an honorable tradition built by the brave men and women who sacrificed much before you.”
The recruits were urged to uphold the sacred duty of defending Nigeria. “You are now being entrusted with the sacred duty of defending our beloved country, Nigeria,” he said, charging them to maintain high professional standards to enhance their abilities and contribute to national unity.
General Musa further advised, “As you file past today, be mindful of the huge responsibility on you, as your actions or inactions will have far-reaching consequences.”

He warned against misconduct, adding, “You must avoid any act that is capable of tarnishing the image of the Nigerian Army and, by extension, the nation.”
He emphasized the reciprocal expectations between the recruits and the nation:

“The Nigerian Army has given you much; the country is, therefore, expecting much more from you in return.”

Highlighting their future deployments, he noted, “Majority of you are going to be deployed to counter the activities of criminal elements that are against the progress of our beloved country.”

He encouraged the recruits to remain focused and resilient, reminding them of their unique status: “It is crucial to also know that you have acquired a special status that subjects you to both civil and military law.”

General Musa urged loyalty and professionalism to constituted authorities, stating, “You must embrace your responsibilities, serve with honor, and never forget the tremendous faith that Nigerians place in you.”

In his closing remarks, he acknowledged the role of parents, families, and friends in supporting the recruits:

“To the parents, families, and friends who have supported and encouraged these young soldiers throughout their journey, your support has paid off in helping them realize their dreams and bringing them to this defining moment.”
