Tech giant Meta has launched paid subscription services for its flagship social media platforms — Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp — in a significant move aimed at reducing its dependence on advertising revenue.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Meta’s Head of Product, Naomi Gleit, in a video shared on Instagram. According to Gleit, the company is rolling out Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus globally, with additional subscription offerings planned for businesses, content creators and artificial intelligence products.
The development comes as Meta faces growing investor scrutiny over its heavy spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company recently projected capital expenditures of between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, largely driven by investments in AI data centres.
Following the announcement, Meta’s stock climbed nearly three percent.
Reports indicate that Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will cost $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will be priced at $2.99 monthly.
Subscribers to Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will gain access to enhanced features such as advanced analytics, story rewatch insights, expanded audience reach and profile customisation tools.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp Plus will focus on personalisation, offering users premium stickers, custom ringtones and exclusive app themes.
Gleit also revealed that Meta plans to eventually unify its subscription services under a single brand known as “Meta One.”
Meta previously introduced ad-free paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe in 2023 as part of efforts to comply with European Union data privacy regulations. The option allowed users to choose between a free, ad-supported experience and a paid ad-free version.
