The Ziva Community Initiative has called on women in Nasarawa State to actively participate in mining activities and smart climate agriculture practices.
The organization made this call during a two-day media training on reporting women’s involvement in sustainable agriculture, lithium mining, and energy transition.
According to the Programme Lead, Mr. Samuel James-Pam, the initiative aims to amplify women’s voices and recognize their crucial role in society and family.
He encouraged women to form cooperatives to access grants and support, emphasizing that collective action can lead to greater benefits.
Professor Shekwonyadu Iyakwari, a geology expert, noted that women are increasingly stepping into the mining sector, challenging traditional norms and reshaping the industry.
He highlighted the potential for economic empowerment through mining, citing Nasarawa State’s over 32 minerals being explored.
The initiative has already trained over 100 women, resulting in increased yields and improved income from mining activities. The organization is committed to fostering a community where women’s voices are heard, and their contributions are recognized.
Key takeaways of the training include that women are encouraged to participate in mining and sustainable agriculture; that cooperatives can help women access grants and support, government intervention is needed to ensure safety in mining areas, as well as that women’s involvement in mining can foster peace and stability.
The Ziva Community Initiative’s efforts aim to promote women’s empowerment and sustainable development in Nasarawa State.
