From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has dissolved its Edo State executive committee following the resignation of its representative, Comrade Mike Ochei, from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Edo State Caretaker Committee.

The union’s National Administrative Council (NAC) convened an emergency meeting in Kaduna today and resolved to dissolve the state executive committee with immediate effect.

The union strongly condemned Comrade Mike Ochei’s unilateral resignation, describing it as contrary to the democratic traditions and organizational discipline that guide the union.

The General Secretary of the union, Comrade Ali Baba, stated that Ochei’s resignation was unexpected and created discontent both within and outside the movement.

NUTGTWN offered an unreserved apology to the leadership of the NLC and reaffirmed its loyalty to the Congress and the Caretaker Committee.

The union’s leadership is currently investigating the involvement of individuals related to the situation, including reported assaults on journalists, and may impose severe disciplinary measures.

NUTGTWN reiterated its full support for the Edo State Caretaker Committee of the NLC and urged all affiliates and comrades to rally behind it.

The union is committed to the unity and progress of the NLC and will continue to collaborate with the national leadership and all state councils to defend the rights of workers and promote the welfare of the Nigerian working class.

This action by the union demonstrates its commitment to organizational discipline and loyalty to the NLC. The dissolution of the Edo State executive committee is a significant step toward maintaining the union’s integrity and ensuring that its members adhere to the principles of collective responsibility.

The Union stated that its decision to dissolve its Edo State executive committee and reaffirm its loyalty to the NLC and the Caretaker Committee is a positive move toward resolving the crisis within the Edo State Council of the NLC.

The union’s commitment to organizational discipline and fidelity to the NLC will help strengthen the Congress and enhance the welfare of workers in the state.
