Intense and continuous midnight explosions have rocked Maiduguri from the axis of Giwa Barracks, driving thousands of residents into a massive stampede out of their homes, scampering for safety, reminiscent of the peak of Boko Haram terror between 2014 and 2017.
The explosions, which continued to rent the midnight skies chased the thousands of the residents of the settlements surrounding the Giwa Barracks – Fori, Jiddari, Polo, GRA and adjoining wards towards Damboa Road, fleeing to locations adjacent University of Maiduguri.
No reasons for the explosions were initially confirmed, out of experience gathered in the terror-troubled terrain, majority of residents hazard guess that it was the arms and military hardware stored in the barracks that were exploding.
It was 12:45 am at the time, but the explosions were continuing, although gradually decreasing.
Details were expected from authorities including about the intensely frightening incident.
Meanwhile the Borno State Deputy Governor, Dr Umar Usman said it was heat explosions from nearby military armoury.
Dr. Umar Usman Kadafur called for patience as the explosions were as a result of a fire incident that erupted at an Armoury of Giwa Barracks, contrary to reports of Boko Haram attacks.
He called on all and sundry to remain indoors, as security operatives were actively responding to the incident.
