In a major drive to rebuild Yobe State’s economy after years of insurgency, the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni has constructed nine new markets and launched multiple rural road projects to restore livelihoods and stimulate commerce.

The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, disclosed this during a media tour, stating that the initiatives are designed to revitalize trade, encourage investment, and foster community resilience.

“His Excellency saw the critical need to rebuild our communities and reinvigorate economic activity,” Bego said on Monday in Yunusari.

“These markets are central hubs to spark commerce and enable people to safely return to their farms and trades.”

The Commissioner outlined that the administration has developed the markets under two models: modern and ultra-modern.

According to the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Buba, four modern markets are either operational or under construction in Yunusari, Ngalda, Machina, and Bunyadi.

He said, five of six planned ultra-modern markets have been completed in Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru, with the sixth in Geidam currently underway.

The newly inspected Yunusari market features 96 shops, 146 open stalls, 46 lock-up stores, a meat shop, administrative block, police station, fire service station, and a banking hall.

Bego also highlighted ongoing rural infrastructure projects, citing the 25km Gashu’a–Masaba road as an example.

“For many years, these farming communities have been landlocked and inaccessible. His Excellency decided it was essential to open up this area,” he said.

Engr. Kabir Mohamed Kadugum, the project engineer, noted that the road connects approximately 14 agrarian communities.

“The Governor’s vision extends beyond the state capital,” Bego added.

“By reaching rural communities and supporting agriculture, we are ensuring that growth is inclusive and sustainable.”
