Nigeria’s gross external reserves have climbed above 51 billion dollars, reaching their highest level in 17 years.
It is the first time since 2009 that the country has crossed this milestone.
This update is according to a Nigeria Economic Update Issue 28 report.
The report questioned: But what does this actually mean for the economy?
It said higher external reserves can help stabilize the naira, support imports, improve investor confidence, and give Nigeria a stronger buffer against global economic shocks.
However, part of this recent increase was driven by higher global oil prices during geopolitical tensions, raising questions about how sustainable the growth really is.
It raised a power as ro what Nigeria’s record-breaking reserves mean, and why they matter for the naira and the economy, and what the country needs to do to keep building its reserves over the long term.
