Dr. Ibrahim Bananu, a Consultant in Family Medicine at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria has urged the relatives of elderly citizens to provide essential support and care to alleviate their suffering.
In an interview with media in Zaria, Dr. Bananu cited the crucial role that family members play in enhancing the well-being of elderly individuals.
Dr. Bananu highlighted the significance of social interaction, regular exercise, and emotional support in improving the health and overall well-being of elderly people.
He encouraged families to accompany their aging relatives to health facilities for regular medical checkups and necessary treatments.
The medical expert also appealed to the Federal Government to consider providing free medication for elderly citizens. He noted that such a policy would significantly help reduce their health challenges. This appeal is particularly important given the high prevalence of health conditions among elderly individuals, such as hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia.
Research shows that individuals aged 60 years and above are more susceptible to health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia, among others. Families and caregivers need to recognize these health challenges and take proactive steps to prevent or manage them.
Dr. Bananu’s call to action underscores the importance of support and care for elderly individuals. By fostering social interaction, providing emotional support, and ensuring access to regular medical care, families can play a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of their elderly loved ones.
Additionally, the Federal Government’s consideration of free medication for elderly citizens would be a significant advancement in addressing their health challenges.
