The Ziva Community Initiative, a non-governmental organization, has trained selected journalists on reporting women’s roles in mining, agriculture, and energy transition in Nasarawa State.
The training, supported by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), aims to build the capacity of women in these sectors and amplify their voices through media coverage.
According to Mr. Samuel James Pam, Lead Programme for Ziva Community Initiative, the training seeks to leverage journalists’ platforms to tell the stories of women in mining and agriculture, promoting sustainable practices and environmental responsibility.
Professor Shekwonyadu Iyakwari, a geology expert, highlighted Nasarawa State’s rich mineral resources, with 32 different minerals being explored.
He advised the government to create an enabling environment for women to thrive in the mining sector.
The project lead, Mrs. Patience Ogbode, emphasized the need to advocate for women’s involvement in policy-making processes, particularly in the transition to renewable energy sources.
The training is part of the organization’s efforts to empower women in mining and agriculture, with over 100 women already trained on sustainable practices.
