From Abdullahi Shugaba, Katsina

The Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has warned against illegal mining and called for robust strategies to combat the scourge and advocated for increased transparency and accountability in the issuance of genuine licenses to miners for exploitation of mineral deposits in the country.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Ibrahim Kaulah Muhammad, Radda made the call during a courtesy visit to Minister of Solid Mineral, Mr. Henry Oladele Alake, in Abuja.

While acknowledging the detrimental impact of illegal mining on local communities and the environment in the country, Radda called for enhanced surveillance and stricter enforcement of regulations to deter individuals and entities engaged in illegal mining activities.

The Governor also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the issuance of licensing process, urging for greater collaboration between governmental agencies and local communities to strengthen oversight mechanisms and prevent illegal mining exploitation.

Governor Radda commended Alake’s leadership qualities and the Ministry’s foresight of use of “Geo-Scan Technology” expressing optimism for its potential to attract reputable investors.

In a response, the minister of solid mineral, Mr.Alake reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to addressing illegal mining activities and promoting responsible resource management. He pledged to work closely with state governments to develop and implement effective strategies to combat the scourge of illegal mining in the country.

Highlighting the need for collective collaborations, the minister proposed a strategic retreat involving all governors to address issues and resolve problems surrounding the sector. This initiative, he said, is aimed to ensure equitable distribution of mineral wealth while fostering a collaborative environment for sustainable development.

He pointed out that there is growing interest from foreign investors in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, acknowledging its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the country’s global competitiveness.

The minister further emphasized the sector’s potential to positively impact on local communities and therefore needs the support of all and sundry to contribute to ensure equitable distribution of the benefits.
