The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Taraba State has called on Christians to put aside their differences and work towards unity.

CAN Chairman, Rev Dr Williams Awoshiri, made this disclosure during the inauguration of its new executives and to commemorate the Nigeria Independence Anniversary in Jalingo on Wednesday.
Dr. Awoshiri emphasized the importance of unity among Christians, citing Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer in John 17:21, noted that unity is essential for the progress of the state and the nation, and that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
He urged all Christians to actively participate in the programs and activities of CAN, emphasizing that unity does not eliminate diversity but ensures that diversity becomes strength rather than division. He called on Christians to work together to promote peace and development in Taraba State.
Dr Awoshiri expressed readiness to partner with the government and other stakeholders to promote peace, justice, and development in Taraba State.
“I urge all Christians, regardless of denomination or tradition, to actively participate in the programs and activities of CAN, Unity does not eliminate our diversity, but it ensures that diversity becomes strength rather than a division. When we are united, we can speak with one voice, defend the faith with courage, and celebrate victories together. When we are united, no force can divide or defeat us.
“To our political leaders, we demand from you honesty, transparency and accountability in the leadership of our dear State. What Tarabans expect from government leaders is that they
simply perform the corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give good water to the thirsty, care for the sick, care for the homeless, educate the street children, care for prisoners, the poor, and pensioners; build and maintain the roads, keep our schools/ hospitals open and
not only when strikes have caused casualties; be concerned with the people first before your personal comfort.
“While we demand good governance from those voted into authority we
demand equally a change of mentality on the part of those Tarabans who see government resources as available to be used with reckless abandon, we must emphasize merit rather than
who you know in high position. Also, there must be an attitudinal change first.
“This Secretariat should be alive with activity not just on special occasions like today, but throughout the year-as a place where Christians can come together to find strength, encouragement, and direction.
“I therefore call upon all denominations and blocs to please make use of this facility, so that together, we can transform it into a living, breathing centre of Christian pilgrimage and unity,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, represented by SA christian affairs, Rev. Fr. Sunday Patrick, congratulated the new CAN executives and encouraged them to lead with unity of purpose.
“Let CAN in Taraba State remain a model of Christian witness, fostering cooperation across denominations and contributing meaningfully to the growth and stability of our dear State,” he said.
