From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The Anglican Diocese of Kaduna has established a committee dedicated to combating gender-based violence (GBV) within the community.

Inaugurated today by the Archbishop of Kaduna Province & Bishop of Kaduna Diocese, Most Rev. Timothy Yahaya, the committee aims to raise awareness, develop prevention strategies, and implement response mechanisms for all forms of GBV, both within the Church and in surrounding communities.

In his address, Archbishop Yahaya stressed the importance of the Church taking a stand against GBV, stating, “If the Church is not relevant in society, then it has lost its value.”

He urged Church leaders to educate themselves about GBV and its impact on individuals and families.

Rev. Victor Eboh, the Desk Officer of the GBV Committee, outlined the committee’s vision of fostering a Diocese where dignity, safety, and equality are upheld as fundamental Christian and social values.

He also mentioned that the committee will collaborate with governmental agencies, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to advocate for justice and systemic change.

Rev. Izuchukwu Oziogu, the Chairman of the Committee, recognized the challenges ahead and prayed for God’s guidance in effecting change.

He expressed gratitude to the Bishop for the trust placed in the committee and promised to meet expectations.

Dr.Terngu Gwar, the State Coordinator of the Human Rights Commission, praised the Diocese for initiating this program, saying,

“We cannot ignore the issues of gender-based violence in our society.” He assured the Commission’s support, adding, “We need to work together to create a more conducive environment for everyone.”

The establishment of the GBV Committee marks a significant step toward addressing the issue of GBV in Kaduna and fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and equality.
