FG presents provisional license to 11 new private varsities

The federal government through the National Universities Commission, NUC has presented provisional lincense to 11 new private universities across the country.

The Minister of Education , Olatunji Alausa during his remark at the presentation of the lincense enjoined that new universities to prioritize academic programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences.

He ueged them to form strategic alliances and partnerships with reputable foreign universities.

According to him, there is need to aspire  to be knowledge incubators, innovation drivers, and contributors to Nigeria’s development.

He encouraged them to review  and strengthen the quality assurance processes for university licensing.

The minister said they should ensure that the provisional licenses granted them are converted to permanent licenses based on performance.

“Education space today and the private universities are poised and positioned to take lead and charge of this. Nigeria must not be left behind. Several global institutions are eager to partner with us.

“Let us open the doors to this partnership for the good of the country, Nigeria. Lastly, I charge every proprietor and promoter and university leaders present here today to be intentional and visionary.

“Do not simply aspire to be degree awarding institutions. Aspire to be incubators of innovation and aspire to be drivers of Nigeria development. The Federal Ministry of Education and its regulatory agencies are ready to support you, but we will also hold you accountable,” he stated.

The Executive Secretary in his welcome address at the event, explained that  private universities are required to operate within approved governance structure and adhere to regulations to maintain quality and sustainability.

He added that the commission offers guidance and support to newly approved universities through mentor institutions, focusing on recruitment, staff development, admissions, and quality assurance.

The ES noted that the Commission aims to ensure Nigerian universities meet global standards.

He enjoined the universities to appoint qualified and experienced principal officers and staff to provide academic and administrative leadership.

He stressed that there is need to develop  adequate academic programmes in strict accordance with the approved core curriculum mandate.

He stated that making substantial and sustained investment in vital infrastructure and essential learning resources, including well-equipped lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and effective ICT facilities is essential.

Some of the newly approved universities are Kevin Eze University, Enugu state, New City University, Ogun state, University of Fortune, Ondo State, Eranova University, Abuja, Southern Atlantic University, Akwa- Ibom , Monarch University, Ogun state, among many others.
