A Cancer Specialist, Veronica Agana has revealed that contrary to the belief of many people, cancer is not a death sentence afterall, and can be defeated.
She revealed this during the commemoration of the 2025 World Cancer Day by Hassy’s Haven Foundation in Kaduna, today (Tuesday).
Veronica, who is a facilitator at Speak4Life Cancer Prevention Initiative, said that the false belief of most people due to fear of cancer has positioned their minds to believe that the result of cancer is death.
She explained that while cancer kills, this wrong mindset by many across the globe, kills faster than the disease itself.
She, however, stressed that with the right nutrition diet and regular checkups, cancer can be prevented and defeated.
“As a human, you are expected to visit the hospital regularly, not because you are sick or praying for it but because regular checkups bring about early detection of such diseases
“Cancer is in four stages, and it takes long to become visible, usually in the second or third stage, which is late because by then, it has spread to other organs.
“So, early detection will expose it before it becomes a threat and help prevent damages it can cause to your body but only if detected early.
“The treatment of cancer is very, very expensive, and it will drain you financially and physically, which is why we advocate for prevention rather than treatment.
“I advise that a nutritional diet should be maintained, exercise regularly, avoid excess consumption of sugar, and eat more fruits. Most importantly, take water regularly, at least three liters a day, to detoxify the body and boost your immune system,” She said.
Speaking earlier, the Founder of HHF, Hussaina Muhammad Yakubu said this year’s theme “United by Unique” campaign, encourages the global community to recognize and understand the perspectives and experiences of those affected by cancer, like connection between healthcare providers, patients, and communities, advocating for health systems that prioritize people.
She added that it aligns with their mission of providing not only assistance but hope, dignity, and strength for cancer patients, particularly for underprivileged women battling the disease.
“Cancer remains a global health challenge, and many women face financial, emotional, and psychological barriers that hinder their access to early detection, treatment, and post-recovery support.
Hajiya Hussaina explained that Hassy’s Haven Foundation was established in memory of Hassana Yakubu, a dedicated journalist who bravely battled cancer for eight years, adding that her resilience continues to inspire the Foundation’s work in championing the rights of women affected by cancer.
“The foundation will continue to
Advocate for Policy Change and Call on government agencies and stakeholders to strengthen cancer care services and ensure affordable treatment for all.
“Every Journey is unique but together, we can defeat Cancer and work towards a future where no one battles cancer.”
