  • Says national interest supersedes party ties

By Mohammed Danlami

There are strong indications that a spokesperson for the Presidential Campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 2023 election, Mr Daniel Bwala may be heading to join the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the All Progressives Congress, the party in power at the centre.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was the PDP presidential candidate in that election. Bwala did not only speak actively and passionately, but fiercely defended Atiku’s candidacy.

The looming defection of Bwala is on the strength of analysis of the comments he reportedly made in defence of disquiet that trailed his meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja early January.

“I don’t think at this time of hunger and problems in the country somebody should be here talking about party”, he said.

This comment suggests that party affiliation is immaterial in the face of national adversity, and that politicians could pitch tent with opposing political party as long as it will give rise to solutions.

In respect of whether he will quit PDP and join the governing APC, he said: “as per defection, God knows tomorrow.”

By this comment, Bwala has given grounds that he may return to APC where he was before the commencement of the 2023 presidential campaigns.

Given the penchant of politicians, elected or appointed, to cross carpet to other parties even when they emerged on the crest of their party of first instance, it is not surprising if Bwala joins the governing APC, afterall he himself had said that he was a spokesperson of Tinubu while in the APC.

“But you must also admit that I have had my history with the president when I was in APC, before the primaries I was practically his key spokesman at the time and I supported his course because I believe in him.”

Bwala did not given any fresh information to suggest that he has stopped believing in President Tinubu, indicating that he is still on the side of the President.

In confirmation of this fact, he was quoted to have added: “I am also here to say that I am supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in achieving the objectives of the problems in the country.”

While making the point that he did not visit President Tinubu as a PDP member but rather as a private citizen, Bwala said:

“Well I am here as a private citizen and who must be bound by the conviction we have towards our country and the need for us to push the country to a better place that we all desire. So, I am not here in the capacity of PDP. First of all, I am not even a leader in the PDP, I am a private citizen.

“But you must also admit that I have had my history with the president when I was in APC.”

With these comments, it is only a matter of time that we will see Bwala cruising back into Tinubu’s camp in the party in power, and bidding a temporary farewell to his former boss, Atiku.
