The Yobe State Police Command has warned politicians, their supporters and other residents against political thuggery, hooliganism and other forms of violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning followed a State Security Council meeting held on Monday at the Government House in Damaturu and chaired by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana.
Briefing journalists on the outcome of the meeting, the Yobe state Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, said the security situation across the state remained relatively stable, with security agencies making significant progress in maintaining peace and public order.
He said the council had approved new strategies to further strengthen security and combat criminal activities across the state.
CP Jibrin said the council also reviewed the potential security challenges associated with the commencement of political activities. He urged politicians and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and in accordance with the law.
He disclosed that although some political activities had already commenced, the state had not witnessed any major rallies, while a few activities had resulted in minor disturbances.
According to him, security personnel had taken measures to contain the disturbances, leading to the arrest of some suspects who would soon be charged to court.
The Commissioner assured all political parties and their supporters of equal treatment during the campaign period, regardless of their political affiliations.
“There is nothing to fear. Regardless of your political party, when it comes to campaigns, everyone will be treated fairly,” he said.
He urged politicians and their supporters to follow the appropriate channels and comply with the law while conducting political activities.
CP Jibrin warned against vandalising vehicles, attacking people, carrying weapons and engaging in other acts of violence, stressing that such actions would not benefit individuals or political groups.
He added that any individual or group that attempts to disrupt political activities or threaten public peace would face the full weight of the law.
