PARIS, March 24 (Xinhua) — French President Emmanuel Macron said he held a telephone conversation on Tuesday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and called on Iran to cease its attacks and engage in negotiations.
Iran should end the “unacceptable attacks against countries in the region,” protect energy and civilian infrastructure, and restore traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, Macron said on X.
He called on Iran “to engage in good-faith negotiations” to achieve de-escalation and meet the “expectations of the international community” on Iranian issues, including the nuclear program.
Also on Tuesday, Macron had a phone call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
According to his post on X, Macron stressed “the absolute necessity for the parties to the conflict to commit to preserving civilian and energy infrastructure … and to embark on a path toward a sincere resumption of dialogue.”
He also assured his Israeli counterpart of “France’s full solidarity with the Israeli people in the face of daily attacks by Iran and Hezbollah.”
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that negotiations between the United States and Iran are continuing, but Tehran has denied the existence of any direct or indirect talks between the two sides.
