From Edirin Robinson, in Kaduna.

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF) has officially announced the distinguished Nigerians who will receive its prestigious 2026 Merit, Good Governance, and Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Foundation’s Director-General, Engr. Dr. Abubakar Gambo Umar shared with journalists in Kaduna today (Monday January 12).

The Director-General explained that the awardees were selected through a rigorous and transparent vetting process that recognized their selfless service to humanity and their commitment to the legacy of the late Sardauna of Sokoto.

Leading the list of honorees is the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, GCFR, who will be posthumously awarded the Good Governance Award in recognition of his commitment to the rule of law and national integrity.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, GCON, Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, CFR, and Chief Anthony N.Z. Sani, OON, for their enduring contributions to public service, justice, national development, and civic advocacy.

Additionally, world-renowned poet and social advocate Maryam Bukar Hassan (Alhanislam) will receive the Merit Award for her impactful work in peacebuilding, youth empowerment, and social change.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on January 20, 2026, in Dutse, Jigawa State, in conjunction with the 12th Annual Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture on Leadership and Good Governance.

This year’s lecture, titled “Delivery of Equitable Access to Quality Basic Education in Northern Nigeria: A Time for Real Action,” will be delivered by Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, the former Minister of Education.

The high-profile event is expected to attract a distinguished audience, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who will serve as the Royal Father of the Day. Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State is also expected to attend.

Dr. Umar reiterated that the Foundation remains committed to preserving the Sardauna’s vision of unity, education, self-reliance, and selfless service, inspiring current and future generations to uphold these noble ideals for the betterment of Nigeria.
