From Umar Alibe, in Damaturu
The Yobe State Ministry of Home Affairs, Information and Culture has taken a major step towards strengthening professionalism and institutional capacity with the organisation of a one-day orientation programme for newly employed staff.
The programme, held on Wednesday at the Civil Service Union Secretariat, Damaturu, was designed to equip the new employees with the knowledge, skills and professional orientation required for effective public service delivery.
The initiative, organised under the leadership of the Commissioner, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, featured presentations on government communication, public-sector financial procedures, effective office administration and the role of cultural heritage in sustainable economic development.

Declaring the programme open, the Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa Shehu, who was represented by the Director of Human Resources, Alhaji Muhammad Mustapha Gambo, commended the Ministry for investing in the orientation and professional development of its newly recruited personnel.
He urged other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to emulate the initiative, particularly in view of the significant number of young people recently recruited into the Yobe State Public Service under the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
The Head of Service stressed that recruitment into the civil service must be complemented by proper orientation, continuous training and adherence to public service rules to enable new employees to understand their responsibilities and contribute effectively to government programmes.
He charged the participants to uphold discipline, integrity, accountability, dedication and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
In his keynote address, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, said the orientation was conceived to provide newly employed staff with a clear understanding of the Ministry’s mandate, their professional responsibilities and the evolving demands of public service.
Bego urged the participants to embrace innovation, digital tools and responsible communication, stressing that the modern public servant must be prepared to adapt to changing technologies and new methods of engaging citizens.
He encouraged the new staff to see their appointments not merely as employment opportunities, but as a responsibility to contribute to the development of Yobe State and improve the relationship between government and the people.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajiya Salamatu Yahaya Nangere, said the programme was organised using the Ministry’s available resources without seeking additional financial support.
She described the initiative as a demonstration of the Ministry’s commitment to staff development, institutional strengthening and efficient utilisation of public resources.
The Permanent Secretary urged the participants to take full advantage of the orientation to familiarise themselves with the Ministry’s mandate, administrative procedures, ethical standards and professional expectations.
The programme featured four major presentations covering “The Modern Information Officer,” “Public Sector Financial Procedures,” “Effective Office Administration,” and “The Role of Cultural Heritage in Sustainable Economic Development.”
The orientation underscored the Ministry’s commitment to building a knowledgeable, disciplined and professionally competent workforce capable of supporting the administration’s development agenda and delivering quality public service to the people of Yobe.
