From Victor Edozie, in Port Harcourt
The Socio- Economic Rights And Accountability Projects, SERAP on Thursday inaugurated the South South Volunteer Lawyers in Port Harcourt.
Inaugurating the bro-bono volunteer Lawyers, Deputy Director of SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare called on Lawyers to show willingness in engaging in public interest litigation.
Oluwadare said that the volunteer lawyers have realized the importance of pubic interest litigation hence the reason they have decided to render bro-bono legal services.
He said that strategic litigation legal advocacy and volunteering is the reason why the Lawyers have decided to lend their skills for social justice , transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
He said, ” It’s very important to understand the content of the state of judgement. Enforcement of judgement is within the administrative powers of the judiciary. It’s the responsibility of the government to enforce judgement that is in the interest of the public.
“We are also taking judicial steps to compel the government to comply in ensuring the enforcement of judgement. The government and of course the Anthony Generals should ensure that the judgement of the courts are obeyed.
” Unless the judgement of the court is set aside by the Appeal court so the best thing to do is to obey the judgement of the court. Since it’s a public interest case it’s the responsibility of the government to ensure that court judgements are obeyed.”
