At least 16 Nigerian military officers have been arrested, with some set to face trial before a judicial panel over their alleged involvement in a recent plot to overthrow the government, defense authorities have said.
The officers, detained since October 2025, are accused of acts of indiscipline and violations of service regulations, Samaila Uba, a military spokesperson, said Monday in a statement in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
Uba said investigations have been completed in line with established military procedures and existing regulations.
“Accordingly, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” he said.
The investigation examined the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel and identified several officers with cases to answer, including allegations related to “plotting to overthrow the government,” which Uba said were inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Nigerian armed forces.
He said that the measures taken are purely disciplinary and form part of the military’s internal mechanisms to preserve discipline, cohesion, and operational effectiveness within its ranks.
