From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna
In his effort to remove Kaduna State from the statistics as the highest neonatal mortality rate in the North-West of Nigeria, the  State Governor, Senator  Uba  Sani has commissioned a Neonatal Unit and a Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plant at the Yusuf Dantosoho Memorial Hospital in Kaduna State.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Kaduna Wednesday, Governor  Sani said it is a direct response to address these alarming statistics.

According to him, the unit will provide comprehensive care for prospective mothers, mothers, and their fetuses, through delivery, the immediate postnatal period, and the neonatal period, facilitating a smooth transition for the neonate into post-neonatal and under-five care.

Give. Sani who was represented by his deputy, Dr.Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe said the unit will cater to newborns aged 0-28 days and offer essential services to sustain the lives of our children and their mothers.

“In addition to addressing neonatal care, the construction of the oxygen plant addresses critical health needs by ensuring a reliable supply of oxygen to the newborn unit and facilities across the state.

“The Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plant uses advanced gas generation technology to produce much-needed oxygen, which will save many lives that might otherwise be lost due to oxygen shortages.

“The neonatal unit is equipped with modern, up-to-date equipment designed to maximize the benefits of the PSA oxygen plant.

“These projects were made possible with the invaluable assistance of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which provided technical expertise and financial support. On behalf of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, and the people of Kaduna State, I extend our heartfelt appreciation to UNICEF for their ongoing support, which extends beyond these projects.

“I also commend the Commissioner and staff of the Ministry of Health and all the project teams involved in bringing these essential facilities to maturity at the Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital for the benefit of the people of Kaduna State.” He said

Speaking earlier the  State Commissioner of Health, Umma K. Ahmed, stressed that the establishment of the dual PSA Medical Oxygen Plant of over 4,500 cubic meter capacity is a testament to our commitment to closing the medical oxygen gap in our healthcare system.

Hajiya  Umma K. Ahmed added that the new Plant will ensure a reliable supply of this vital resource, thereby enhancing the hospital’s capacity to save lives and improve patient outcomes across the state.

“With the commissioning of this plant, we are not only ensuring a steady and reliable supply of medical oxygen but also enhancing our capacity to respond to emergencies and critical care needs

“With the commissioning of this plant, we are not only ensuring a steady and reliable supply of medical oxygen but also enhancing our capacity to respond to emergencies and critical care needs.

“In addition to addressing the oxygen supply gap, we are equally proud to commission the Neonatal Unit, dedicated to the care of newborns, ensuring that they receive the best possible start in life.

“The Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly trained healthcare professionals, ready to provide exceptional care to our youngest patients.

” It will provide specialized care for premature babies, those with low birth weight, and other medical conditions requiring intensive monitoring and treatment.

“I would like to use this opportunity to thank all the healthcare workers, the administrative staff of Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital, and everyone involved in making this project a reality.

“Your hard work and dedication are the backbone of our healthcare system, and your efforts are deeply appreciated. Let me once again express our sincere thanks to UNICEF for their partnership and support.”
