From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna
The Kaduna State Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has recommended Governor Uba Sani to create a commission of inquiry to reveal the true extent of the debts inherited from the former Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.
Addressing the press in Kaduna, the Chairman of the Kaduna State Inter-Party Advisory Council, Ahmed Tijani Mustapha, underlined the commitment of IPAC to uphold democratic values, and governance norms, and act as a driving force of democracy in shaping the political terrain of Kaduna State.
IPAC, he said, is dedicated to advancing the common interests of the populace, government, and various political entities.
Emphasizing the need for good governance and accountability, he stated: “Our focus remains on fostering a conducive environment for good governance and ensuring accountability in the administration.”
Governor Uba Sani had previously disclosed the burden of inherited debts amounting to a substantial sum of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual obligations, significantly impeding the government’s ability to meet even the basic obligation of paying employees.
Condemning the alleged self-serving and unethical practices of the past which hindered the state’s progress and resulted in financial distress, including jeopardizing the state’s IGR by using it as collateral for local banks, the Chairman denounced such actions.
IPAC of Kaduna State pledged its backing for transparent leadership policies and commended the governor’s commitment to steering the state out of the financial crisis, notwithstanding the daunting debt load.
Appreciating the governor’s strategic approach to managing the state’s finances, the Chairman lauded his perseverance in striving to uplift Kaduna State without resorting to additional borrowing throughout his tenure.
In a push for transparency, he urged the governor to promptly establish a commission of inquiry tasked with demystifying the origins of the colossal debts and the associated contractual liabilities to unearth any executive corruption that may exist.
Highlighting the importance of transparency, he advocated for the disclosed findings of such an inquiry to be shared with the public through a town hall meeting.
