From Victor Edozie, Port Harcourt
The activities of scavengers have raised security concerns in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State.
The popular Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa is located in the local government area.
The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Hon. Charles Wobodo warned those involved in scavenging activities in the area to stop or face the wrath of the council.
Hon. Wobodo stated this during an inspection visit to Elele market, where he stumbled on a scavenging site, where all forms of scraps was gathered and hidden in a secluded place.
Hon. Wobodo said that the purpose of the visit to the scavenging site is to find out where crimes are being perpetrated.
While warning workers at the site, Hon Wobodo directed the owner of the facility to stop the illegal activities, pointing out that the local government council would not hesitate to seal and convert the scavenging site to its property.
He said, “if anybody is caught anywhere in the process of bringing anything here, I will come back to seize the place, and it will become LGA property,”
Anyhow you want to do it, I don’t want a problem, but we don’t want to hear that somebody in the course of picking something, they stole something.”
He warned that the council will not tolerate any act that will enhance criminal activity in the area.
