By Godwin Agia, Jalingo

The State Magistrate Court in Jalingo has ordered the arrest of Abdulmumin Imam, a social media activist, for allegedly defaming Minister of State for Regional Development, Barrister Uba Maigari.

Imam allegedly posted on his verified Facebook page that the minister diverted ₦16.5 billion meant for the reconstruction of the Namnai bridge in Taraba State.
Counsel to the minister, Dr. Ibrahim Effiong, says Imam’s accusations have injured the minister’s reputation and pitched him against the people of Taraba State.
“I think it is important for people to be held responsible for their content on the Social Media… If you want to attack people on the guise of activism, you should be of no questionable character,” he said
Effiong explains that the minister wants Imam to defend his claims in court, “My client is only seeking for the handler to come and defend his claims before the Court so that the records will be set straight.”
“Yes we have freedom of speech but it comes with a responsibility of utilising it responsibly. That is the only way to protect the sanctity of that space.
“I think it is important for people to be held responsible for their content on the Social Media… If you want to attack people on the guise of activism, you should be of no questionable character,” he said.
He adds that activism comes with bravery and responsibilities, and Imam should be held accountable for his social media content.
The minister’s counsel emphasizes that the goal is not to seek compensation or damages, but to clear the minister’s name.
Imam has allegedly gone into hiding, claiming security agencies are looking for him, but Effiong says they approached the court, not security agencies.
