From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has congratulated Nigerians and the global Muslim community on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan fasting.

However, in a statement signed by Prof. T. A. Muhammad-Baba, the National Publicity Secretary, the Forum expressed concern over the severe economic hardships and existential challenges facing the country, describing the situation as “despair, hopelessness, and despondency.”

The statement highlighted the widespread plight of multidimensional poverty, socioeconomic and political deprivations, and insecurity across the nation, especially in the Northern region, which has been labeled the “poverty capital of the world.”

The ACF observed that the situation continues to worsen, with armed non-state actors disturbing peace in several states and religious extremists resurfacing with their destructive agenda.

The Forum urged political leaders to take the crisis seriously, warning that continued deterioration could lead to public protests.

Instead, the ACF called for good governance, responsible leadership, and a focus on addressing the people’s needs rather than engaging in political campaigns for re-election in 2027.

The statement also appealed to politicians planning to run for office in 2027 to embrace prudence, restraint, and reflection, and to prioritize their duties to the electorate.

Additionally, the ACF expressed support for security agencies working to eliminate crime in Nigeria.

The statement ended with a message of hope, urging Nigerians to remain patient and steadfast in prayers for a better Nigeria, as “nothing in existential conditions lasts forever.”
