The Nasarawa state Governor, Abdullahi Sule has called on the state youths to avail themselves for relevant technical courses for employment in the growing number of Chinese mining companies operating in the state.
The governor made the call during an inspection tour of the Jiuling Lithium Mining Company construction site in Endo, Nasarawa Local Government Area.
His visit followed a recent trip to China, where he met with the company’s chairman, who pledged to establish a similar industry in the state.
Speaking to journalists after the tour, Governor Sule said that only qualified citizens would be considered for employment at the mining company.
“I asked them how this industry would benefit Nasarawa State and its people. They started with employment, saying they would hire our citizens, especially those with technical qualifications, and pay them a minimum of N500,000. That is what I also confirmed today,” he stated.
The Governor noted that some of the engineers currently working at the site were from Nasarawa, while others were from Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.
“While I am happy that there are people from Nasarawa among them, I would like to encourage our youths to study technical courses that will enable them to work in companies like this. If there are enough qualified technicians and engineers from Nasarawa, they will be given priority. But if not, the company will have no choice but to hire from elsewhere,” he explained.
On environmental concerns, Governor Sule expressed satisfaction with the company’s adherence to safety and environmental standards.
Meanwhile, during a meeting with a joint team from Jiuling, Sinoma, and Gangfeng, the governor assured them of his administration’s support in providing infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity. He also revealed plans to extend power from the national grid to reduce production costs.
Governor Sule commended Jiuling’s decision to engage Sinoma as the contractor for the mining site.
“Sinoma is a globally respected company. I know the quality of work they do. I am looking forward to commissioning this project later this year. I am also pleased with their approach to environmental protection. Instead of using trucks, they use a belt conveyor system, which minimizes environmental impact and protects both Nigerian and Chinese workers,” he said.
Regarding security at the mining site, the governor acknowledged the company’s concerns and assured them of adequate protection.
“I deliberately invited the Commissioner of Police and other security heads so they could hear you directly. Five years ago, it was impossible to come here due to insecurity. But with the help of the Federal Government, we set up a military super camp nearby and built the road from Mararaba, which forced the criminals out,” he stated.
The Managing Director of Jiuling Lithium Mining Company, Xiong Jin, reiterated the company’s commitment to establishing one of the largest lithium processing factories in Endo, Nasarawa State, at an estimated cost of $200 million.
“We will ensure this project benefits the people of Nasarawa. Graduates working at the site will earn a minimum of N500,000. However, we seek the state government’s support in providing security and infrastructure,” Jin said.
