The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu has disclosed the Federal Government’s efforts to nationalise content of cartoons consumed by Nigerian children.
This is in addition to other measures being taken to promote national values and patriotism, especially among the youths who form a greater part of Nigeria’s population.
Mallam Issa-Onilu made the disclosures on Tuesday at a Town Hall meeting with the media in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said cartoons that our children consume today are mostly of foreign origin which psychologically turn them to foreigners.
He said nationalisation of cartoon contents rich in local culture and values is necessary so that our children can be moulded in accordance with the tradition of their parents and country.
Issa-Onilu also said that the NOA has proposed to the Federal Executive Council, FEC, for the National Youth Service Corps, (NYSC) and the NOA to collaborate to inculcate the national value system into our youth on national service.
Also recommended to the FEC is a requirement that anybody who has been elected to hold a political office must undergo national value orientation before assuming office.
He said the Agency recommended Citizenship Studies to be taught in primary, secondary and university to deepen the consciousness, duties and obligations of citizens to the state, and the duties of the state to the citizens.
He said also that recommendation for the establishment of Citizens Brigade to nurture children to become proper Nigerias has been approved by the Federal Government.
He said the NOA also secured the approval of FEC for the Industrial Training Fund, ITF, to train artisans on attitude in order to inculcate in them the value of dignity to enable them know about diligence to work.
According to the NOA DG, all the recommendations to FEC were approved and are being implemented.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to reform the country’s value system for sustainable growth and development.
He expressed confidence that with the courage and vision of President Tinubu to implement his vision for the country, it is only a matter of time for him to transform the fortunes of the country for greatness.
He said in the search for national identity which defines who a Nigerian truly is, the NOA came up with a value system, the National Value Charter, which establishes and sustains the connection between the citizens and the country and in essence motivates patriotism among the citizenry.
