Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has refuted claims by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) that the state has defaulted on implementing the National Minimum Wage.
His administration clarified that the lowest paid civil servant in the state received ₦72,000 as gross salary in November, demonstrating full compliance with the law.
A statement by Chief Press Secretary Malam Ibraheem Musa explained that the NLC’s focus on consequential adjustments misunderstands the distinction between salary increments and the minimum wage.
The state government highlighted its fiscal constraints, noting that its monthly revenue of ₦12 billion is already heavily allocated to wages and loan repayments, leaving limited funds for development projects that benefit the majority of Kaduna’s 10 million residents.
The government urged patience from labor unions on consequential adjustments, citing its commitment to workers’ welfare.
It also pointed to initiatives like free transportation for civil servants as evidence of its labor-friendly approach while emphasizing the need to balance worker demands with broader developmental priorities.
