From Adia Jildo, in Juba

The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of South Sudan has presented a memo before the council of ministers, under the Nyemur/ Limur multi-purpose water and resource development project, to construct two dams in Uganda.
The Nyemur/ Limur multi-purpose water and resource development project between South Sudan and Uganda is to construct two dams for irrigation and water supply in Uganda and South Sudan.
The project will see the construction of irrigation schemes in both countries to provide water supply for both human and livestock.
The project is estimated at 96 million USD, from which 36 million USD is a budget for the dam inside South Sudan.
The Deputy Minister of information, Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok, said the Council of Ministers has recommended that the Irrigation minister obeyed specific marks for the project area including consultations with stakeholders and communities.
When asked how the project came about, the deputy minister of information said, “It is the technical arm of the government to decide where they can actually put the project. So, it is not actually us that are forcing them to identify certain locations.
The Fula hydro-electricity dam project has been delayed severally by the government on grounds of funds.
Earlier in May, investment minister Dr. Dhieu Mathok Diing said during the Central Equatoria Business Union’s Juba Economic Forum that the country lacked budget for the project, adding that it needed a cost of two billion United States dollars.
“The government has initially rejected paying the 15-20% advance payment due to the fact that there is no sufficient budget for the project,” he informed Citizenship Daily Newspaper.
