A total of 1,711 houses have been destroyed, and 6 people were killed following heavy flood in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The flood worsened by the collapse of Wagga Bridge linking Borno and Adamawa states leading to the submerging of over 1000 hecters of land.
Head of Operations, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Yola Office, Ayuba Ladan made the disclosure while taking round the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta on the spot assessment tour in the affected communities.
He confirmed that 10 more people sustained injuries while 10, 264 people were affected by the flood.
Ladan explained that findings by his assessment team have revealed that the volume of water from heavy rainfall in Shuwa overwhelmed the rivers around the Shuwa communities which resulted in severe flooding that affected various communities, leading to the collapse of the Shuwa bridge that links Gulak,
Ladan confirmed that houses, shops, boreholes, and many valuables were completely destroyed in the affected areas including Kirchinga, Duhu, Maiwandu ,Jahili, Kokohu, Lumadu, Zhau, Palam, Kwambula, Shiware, and Shuwa.
While commiserating with the people of the area, Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta expressed the sympathy and concern of the Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s government over the devastating situation caused by pressure of rainfall.
Professor Farauta who visited the area, weekend, said that the state government directed its state emergency management Agency (ADSEMA) to immediately provide necessary relief materials to the victims.
Farauta called on the Federal government to, as a matter of urgency, assist the victims in mitigating the sufferings of 10, 264 flood victims in Madagali Local Government Area of the state.
She expressed shock over colossal destruction of houses and farmlands, advising the families affected to take solace in God.
“Am appealing to the federal government and humanitarian donors to come to support victims of Madagali flood.
“The collosal damage is too much as 11 communities were affected by the flood,”
Farauta said.
One of the victims, Hauwa Bukar, a mother of nine children said “our house has been washed away, it’s only a plot of land left.”
She said “We can not  question God for his action, but we need support from our governments and well-to-do people in the country. “
Local government authority in collaboration with the Nigerian Red cross have established eight (8) temporary centres to shelter the internally displaced Persons, IDPs.
The centres are namely: Lumadu Primary School, Lumadu Health Care Centre, GSS Shuwa, Central Primary School Shuwa, Christian Sec Sch Shuwa, Divine Mercy School Shuwa, Mayo -wandu, and Lumadu Model Health Care Center for the victims.
