From Adia Jildo, South Sudan

The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has confirmed one person injured in a shooting in Juba on Tuesday night.

Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding Tuesday night shooting that left Juba residents terrified.

The spokesperson of the South Sudan People’s defence forces, Maj.Gen Lul Ruai Koang said the alarming incidents of gunfire erupted due to civilian non-compliance with security checks leaving the security forces to take measures.

“What triggered the shooting was non-compliance of stopping and allowing security forces to search the vehicles. They were defying orders for their vehicles to be checked. And they sped off or continued drivingz,” Lul said while briefing the media in Juba.

Lul  confirmed that the cases were two distinct occurrences which happened simultaneously, each arising from civilians failing to adhere to established security protocols amidst heightened security measures in the capital, aimed at maintaining order and ensuring public safety.

Lul told media that the first incident involved a lawyer, who allegedly kidnapped two underage girls from around the KonyKonyo area while the second incident involved a driver of a military vehicle, who was fired at, after he refused to stop several times for security checking near the Parliament all happening simultaneously which later was taken opportunity of by opportunists shooting radomly in areas of Munuki, TongPing and Customs

He however cautioned the public to adhere to security measures citing its for the safety and security of the people.

“We will however subject our own security force that were on duty to further investigation so that we find out were there any lack of control and command over the forces that were doing their duty? Were there any misuse of firearms and use of force?”
