From Abubakar Abdullahi, in Lafia
The organised labour in Nasarawa State has fully complied with the ongoing nationwide strike as directed by their national headquarters.
The organised labour comprised of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) made the disclosure after the enforcement meeting on Monday in Lafia.
Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, State NLC Chairman, Ismaila Okoh said all the affiliates of the union in the state had complied and withdrew their services as directed by their national leaders.
He explained that the strike was due to the level of lack of seriousness by the federal government on the issue of the new minimum wage and increase in the electricity tariff.
“We had complied with the strike already, but we have to meet at the state level to formally informed our affiliates to be on the same page,” he said.
The NLC Chairman announced the names of 11 persons as the monitoring and enforcement team to go round and ensure total compliance in all ministries, departments and agencies.
He said that workers should continue to remain at home until they receive further directives from the leadership of the union.
On his part, Mohammed Doma, State TUC Chairman said that the strike was long overdue because of the suffering that workers were going through since the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023.
He explained that the price of everything had gone up and civil servants cannot longer fuel their vehicles, pay their medical bills or pay their children school fees again.
“The salary of most civil servants cannot buy a bag of rice in the market, so what about other food items and ingredients,” he said.
He therefore said that over 70 affiliates of the organised labour in the state had withdrawn their services and shutdown their offices in compliance with the directive on the nationwide strike.
When the correspondent of Citizenship Daily went round Lafia the capital of the state, it was observed that offices as well commercial banks were locked and customers were seen stranded outside the banks.
The correspondent visited Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic Lafia, College of Agriculture, Science and Technology Lafia, Federal Secretariat, and ministries of Agriculture, Education, Health and Lands among others, which were all under lock and key.
