Lack of employment opportunities and the growing economic challenges facing young people are increasingly forcing many to travel to Sahel countries such as Libya, Algeria, Morocco and others in search of better opportunities.
It is estimated that 50 or more young people leave their communities for these countries almost every week, particularly from local government areas in the northern and eastern parts of Yobe State.
Many of these young people leave their homes and families in search of opportunities in trading, farming, livestock rearing and other activities they believe could provide them with income and improve their livelihoods.
However, their journeys are often filled with numerous risks and difficulties, both along the routes and at their destinations.
In some cases, the challenges become fatal, resulting in the loss of lives.
Sadly, five young people have reportedly lost their lives, four of whom were from a village called Tsangayi in Mayori Ward, Yusufari Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The increasing movement of young people from these communities highlights the urgent need for greater economic opportunities, employment, skills development and sustainable livelihoods to discourage dangerous journeys in search of a better future.
According to one of the relatives of the deceased whom our reporter spoke with, the young men were reportedly engaged in mining activities in the Furda area along the Mali-Algeria border when an unknown object was allegedly thrown from a distance and landed among them.
The relative identified some of the victims as Usman Dan Iliya, Idi Dan Malam Rabiu, and Ado Dan Idi Nama.
Another victim could not immediately be identified because his body was severely dismembered in the incident.
The source also said that several other people sustained different types of injuries, including fractures and other serious wounds.
Families of the victims are currently mourning in Tsangai Village and are appealing to both the Yobe State Government and the Federal Government for urgent assistance and intervention over the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the funeral prayers for the deceased had not yet been conducted.
