A two week old infant has died at the Ortese Internally Displaced Persons, IDP camp in Benue state on Monday, September 28, 2026 at the Bishop Murray hospital, Makurdi.
The death of the child followed the death of his mother, 23 year old Mrs Seember Rochas who died during child birth two weeks ago on September 9.
Mr Mende Rochas, 27 year old husband of the deceased woman informed the media that his wife successfully gave birth to twins before she died after the delivery.
Citizenship Daily gathered that the deceased woman gave birth in the IDP camp without any medical attention and passed away an hour later.
On whether the deceased woman did not undergo ante natal care during her pregnancy before delivery, her husband said there was a make-shift health stand at the camp where pregnant IDP’s were attended to but his wife went into labour by 7pm when staff at the centre had already closed for the day and unfortunately, nobody was around to administer the post natal care resulting in his wife’s death.
It was also learnt that the new-born babies, both boys, were still at the camp and taken care of by some elderly women unfortunately one of them died on Monday.
He said that camp officials gave him some baby food for the new born which, however, was exhausted.
When contacted, the Information Officer, Benue State Emergency Management Agency BSEMA, Mr Tema Ager confirmed the death of the woman, stating that she stopped attending ante natal services offered by Terres De Homes before delivery which could have been responsible for her untimely death.
Ager said that the twins fell ill and were admitted at the Bishop Murray Hospital where one of them died on Monday, September 28, 2026.
