Leadership is not a position. It is not a title on a business card, a corner office, a reserved parking space, or the ability to issue instructions. Leadership is example. People do not follow job descriptions. They follow behaviour.
This is one of the oldest truths in human history, yet it remains one of the most ignored. Too many leaders believe influence comes from authority. They assume that because they have power, people will automatically trust them. They are wrong.

Authority can secure compliance.
Only example earns commitment.
The principle is simple: do what you expect others to do. If you expect discipline, demonstrate discipline.
If you expect integrity, practice integrity.
If you expect resilience, show resilience.
If you expect excellence, produce excellent work. Anything less is hypocrisy. And hypocrisy is the silent assassin of leadership. It does not destroy trust overnight. It leaks credibility slowly, one inconsistency at a time.
People may forgive mistakes. They rarely forgive double standards.

This is why leading from the front remains one of the most powerful principles in leadership. Alexander the Great understood this more than two thousand years ago. He did not command his armies from a distant tent while others absorbed the danger. He rode into battle alongside his soldiers. He endured the same conditions, faced the same risks, and shared the same hardships. His men followed him because his courage was visible. His actions matched his expectations.
That is what created loyalty.

The battlefield has changed, but human nature has not. Today’s leaders may not ride horses into war, but they still face moments when people ask the same question: will you stand with us when things become difficult? The answer determines whether people comply or commit.

Herbert Wigwe understood this principle. During periods of rapid expansion and intense pressure, he was known for being deeply engaged with his teams. He did not demand sacrifices he was unwilling to make himself. He stretched himself before asking others to stretch. That created trust.
People support leaders who share the burden.

Real leadership is not performance.
It is credibility. You cannot outsource example. You cannot delegate integrity.
You cannot expect people to embrace standards you refuse to live by. When leaders model the behaviour they expect, culture changes. People stop working merely because they have to. They begin working because they want to. Fear gives way to inspiration. Compliance evolves into commitment. Culture is not created by policy documents. It is created by repeated behaviour. The leader’s conduct becomes the organization’s curriculum.
People watch far more than they listen.
Your life becomes the manual. Your habits become the training programme.
Your consistency becomes the culture.
The opposite is equally true.

When leaders fail to lead from the front, trust begins to disappear. Not immediately. Quietly. People notice when leaders demand sacrifices they are unwilling to make. They notice when leaders preach discipline while living carelessly. They notice when leaders insist on punctuality but arrive late.
They notice when leaders speak about transparency while withholding information. Small contradictions create large consequences. Many leaders do not fail because they lack intelligence.
They fail because they lack credibility.
They ask people to endure hardship while protecting themselves from inconvenience. They preach accountability while avoiding responsibility. They speak about change while resisting personal sacrifice.
Eventually, people stop believing the message because they no longer believe the messenger. And once trust disappears, leadership becomes an empty performance.

History repeatedly confirms this lesson. During the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria in 2014, Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh faced enormous pressure. Releasing an infected patient would have been easier.
Looking away would have been safer.
Passing responsibility to someone else would have been more convenient.
She did none of those things.
She stood firm. She accepted personal risk to protect millions of people.
She led from the front. Her courage helped prevent a national health catastrophe.

Leadership is not giving instructions from safety. It is stepping forward when others step back. It is carrying responsibility when avoiding it would be easier. It is standing in the heat so others can walk in the light. That is leadership in its purest form. Leading from the front does not always require physical presence. Sometimes it means emotional presence. Sometimes it means intellectual honesty. Sometimes it means moral consistency. Sometimes it means saying, “I was wrong.” Sometimes it means accepting responsibility before blame begins. Leadership is not perfection. Leadership is ownership.
Nelson Mandela embodied this principle after twenty-seven years in prison. He emerged with the moral authority to pursue revenge. Instead, he chose reconciliation. He lived the values he asked others to embrace. That is why people trusted him. Not because he was flawless, but because he was consistent.
People follow leaders whose lives reinforce their words.

Before expecting others to follow you, ask yourself three difficult questions.
Would you follow yourself if you had no title? What are you asking others to do that you are unwilling to do yourself?
When was the last time you chose discomfort over convenience? These questions reveal the gap between leadership and position. Real influence lives inside that gap. Leadership is not a seat you occupy. It is a burden you carry.
It means taking responsibility first.
Facing pressure first. Making sacrifices first. Showing courage first. Because people remember where you stood when things became difficult. They remember who disappeared. They remember who stayed. And they follow those who stand with them, not above them.

The most powerful leadership tool you possess is not your authority, your expertise, or your charisma. It is your example. Speeches inspire for a moment.
Policies guide for a season. Incentives motivate for a while. But example shapes culture for generations. Leadership begins where excuses end. And it becomes real the moment your actions say to others: follow me, because I am willing to go first.
