Shehu Sani advises Goodluck Jonathan against 2027 Presidential bid

From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna
Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has urged ex-President Goodluck Jonathan not to run in the 2027 presidential election, citing significant changes in the political landscape.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sani emphasized that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Jonathan once knew is no longer the same; it has become fragmented and weakened.

Sani pointed out that the PDP in the South-West is endorsing President Bola Tinubu, while some members of the party are part of a coalition with him. He believes this indicates a shift in the party’s dynamics, making it unfavorable for Jonathan’s potential presidential bid.

Additionally, Sani dismissed the emerging opposition coalition formed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that its members lack ideological depth and are not distinct from President Tinubu’s political philosophy. He remarked, “The people that constitute the coalition today are not ideologically and philosophically different from the programs which the Tinubu administration is prosecuting.”

Sani’s advice is based on his assessment of the current political climate and the internal struggles within the PDP.

He believes that Jonathan would be wasting his time by pursuing a presidential bid in 2027, given the party’s current state and the absence of a strong opposition coalition.

Speculation regarding Jonathan’s potential return to the presidency has been circulating, especially against the backdrop of discussions surrounding a one-term Southern presidency and the emergence of the new opposition coalition.

However, Sani’s comments suggest that Jonathan would face significant challenges if he decides to contest.
