PDP rejects Kaduna by-election results

From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The leading opposition party in Kaduna State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rejected the results of the recent by-elections, which saw the All Progressive Congress (APC) emerge victorious.

In a statement released on Monday by the Kaduna State Chairman of the PDP, Sir Edward Percy Masha, the party expressed its dissatisfaction with the election outcomes across all three constituencies. Masha stated, “We will be meeting with our candidates, stakeholders, and legal team to determine our next course of action.”

Masha highlighted that the unprecedentedly low voter turnout reflects a significant lack of confidence in the electoral process, worsened by Governor Uba Sani’s failure to conduct the 2024 local government elections in the state. He warned, “We fear that if this undemocratic trend continues, voter apathy will only worsen, potentially reaching alarming levels by 2027.”

He urged the people of Kaduna State to maintain their trust and support for the PDP, stating, “We are undergoing reforms to strengthen our party’s structures and ensure better representation for all. Together, we will restore dignity, fairness, and genuine democracy in our state.”

Despite their rejection of the election results, Masha expressed heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru State and Federal Constituencies for their overwhelming support during the bye-elections held on August 16, 2025, saying, “Your unwavering commitment and support will never be taken for granted.”

Additionally, he acknowledged the crucial roles played by party stakeholders before, during, and after the elections, noting that their dedication has reinforced the loyalty of PDP supporters across Kaduna State.

Masha also criticized what he described as the desperation of the current government. He pointed to the deployment of “Gestapo and commandos” by the Uba Sani-led administration, suggesting that the APC is unsettled by the PDP’s growing appeal in the state.

He further alleged that members of their campaign committee for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency were abducted, and funds intended for logistics and agents’ allowances were seized. Masha claimed these actions, along with widespread vote buying, were conducted openly, demonstrating the APC’s blatant disregard for democratic principles.
