The Benue State Government has commenced process towards domesticating the National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
Recall that on February 24, 2025, the State had launched the Durable Solution project to return IDPs to their ancestral homes. This policy document preceds that one.
In this vein, the State Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management conveyed a stakeholders in Makurdi on Thursday to review the action and work plan for validation.
State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Aondowase Kunde explained that the aim of the 2-day workshop is to critically look at the provisions of the document and validate it.
He urged stakeholders to make important inputs on the document to make it workable and meet best international practice.
Said he, “We are trying to domesticate the document based on peculiarities and realities in the State. After the launch of the Durable Solution, we need to have a document that will guide the return of the IDPs. The document focuses on the Dos and Donts, giving voice and upholding the rights of the IDPs.
“After the validation, I will present it to the State Executive Council for ratification and it becomes a document of the State”.
Murjanatu Kabir, Advocacy Campaigns and Policy Manager, Save the Children based in the country office, Abuja said they envisioned a world where the child has right to survival, adding that they want to ensure that key challenges affecting the IDPs are tackled.
