David Mark

By Folorunso Alagbede, Abuja

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and moved into the camp of the opposition party.
Senator Mark, a founding member of the PDP, after formally resigning from the leading opposition party, ventured into oppositional coalition “to safeguard democracy,” according to his letter of resignation from the party.
His resignation became public knowledge shortly after his appointment as the interim chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a platform recently adopted by a coalition of opposition parties preparing to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The former Senate President, who was instrumental in shaping the PDP during his political career, explained that his decision to leave the party was due to the ongoing leadership crisis and internal divisions which, according to him, has seriously weakened the party and damaged its public image.
Mark, in his letter dated June 27, 2025, addressed to his ward Chairman in Otukpo, Benue State, explained that although he had remained faithful to the PDP even after its 2015 presidential election defeat, he could no longer continue with the party given its current state.
According to him, after consulting with his family and political associates, he opted to join the new opposition alliance, describing it as a credible effort to safeguard democracy and offer Nigerians a stronger political alternative.
Already, the coalition has chosen the ADC as its new political platform, and David Mark has been appointed as the interim national chairman, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named as interim national secretary.
