From Femi Mustapha, Kaduna
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), Kaduna State Chapter, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Council described him as a principled leader whose life was marked by discipline, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to national and moral renewal.
In a condolence message signed by its Secretary, Engr. AbdurRahman Hassan, the Council extended heartfelt sympathies to Buhari’s family, the Federal Government, and the people of Katsina State, referring to his passing as an “irrefutable loss.”
The Council highlighted that a significant aspect of Buhari’s legacy was his courageous support for the reimplementation of Shari’ah law in Northern Nigeria during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure.
At that time, this move sparked intense national debates and met with considerable resistance. Buhari provided both constitutional and moral backing, ensuring that Northern states could exercise their right to adopt Shari’ah per the wishes of their people.
This support helped restore confidence among Islamic scholars and laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria.
In addition to religious matters, the SCSN pointed out Buhari’s long-standing battle against corruption and public indiscipline.
They cited his War Against Indiscipline campaigns, his crackdown on money politics, and the controversial, yet “intention-driven,” naira redesign policy as reflections of his belief that governance must be rooted in accountability and a sense of moral responsibility.
While acknowledging that Buhari’s tough methods often polarized opinion, the Council asserted that his vision for a morally upright, economically fair, and institutionally disciplined Nigeria was clear.
Praying for Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, the Council urged his family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large to take comfort in the enduring legacy he leaves behind. They concluded with a hopeful note: “May Nigeria continue to produce leaders who serve with courage, clarity, and conviction.”
