Barely 24 hours after meeting with President Ahmed Bopa Tinubu in Abuja, the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has announced his formal defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Fubara announced his defection on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Fubara cited his defection as a “gesture of reciprocity” for the support and cooperation his administration has received from President Bola Tinubu since the political crisis in the state in late 2023.
Governor Fubara who spoke to his cheering supporters said, “We can’t support Mr President if we don’t fully identify with him; not backyard support.”
17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martin Awaewhule, last week defected to APC last week.
The Assembly members before their defection had passed a vote of confidence on President Tinubu and urged him to contest for 2027 presidential election.
