From Femi Mustapha in Kaduna

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in various parts of Kaduna State, displacing hundreds of residents and damaging properties..

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its Kaduna Operations Office to coordinate emergency response efforts, deploying teams to conduct rescue operations and rapid assessments to identify those in need.

The affected areas include Kigo Road, Nassarawa, Bashama Road, Haliru Dantoro Road, Kabala Constain, Rafin Guza, and adjoining communities.

NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, stated: “Our teams are on the ground working to rescue victims and assess the impact of the flooding.

“We are coordinating closely with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders to ensure timely support.”

The Chief Search and Rescue Officer, Mr. Abdulkadir Mohammed, added: “Our teams continue to conduct rescue operations and rapid assessments to identify those in need. NEMA remains committed to providing humanitarian support and mitigating the impact of this disaster.”

Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Environment issued a flood alert for 14 states, including Kaduna, highlighting 43 locations across the country that may experience heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding. Kafanchan in Kaduna State has been identified as a high-risk area.

On September 11, NEMA’s Kaduna Operations Office led a joint flash flood inspection exercise in the Tukur-Tukur and Anguwan Juma Wards of the Zaria Local Government Area.

The exercise aimed to evaluate the extent of the flash flood’s impact, identify vulnerable areas, and strengthen coordinated response strategies among relevant stakeholders.

NEMA, in collaboration with KADSEMA and other partners, is working to provide relief to affected families.

The agency has developed flood risk maps, community vulnerability profiles, and response guides to enhance disaster preparedness in Kaduna.
