From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the governments and citizens of Niger and Kano states following two recent disasters.

In a statement issued today (Sunday) by the National Publicity Secretary, Prof. T. A. Muhammad-Baba, the ACF reported that Niger State experienced a devastating flood a few days ago.

This unprecedented flooding claimed many lives, destroyed property, and disrupted livelihoods. It submerged homes and critical infrastructure, halting the transportation of goods, including food supplies, to and from the southwestern states of Nigeria.

Additionally, the ACF addressed a tragic road accident in Dakatsalle, Kano State, involving a contingent of athletes, officials, and journalists returning from a sports festival in Ogun State. While the accident’s grim statistics report at least 20 lives lost, further details are still emerging.

The Forum mourns the lives lost in these tragedies and prays for the Almighty to provide solace and support to the survivors, granting them the strength to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. It also wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

In its statement, ACF expressed hope that such tragic events will not recur in these states or anywhere else in the country. The ACF had previously warned of the potential for flooding in the Mokwa region and urged local, state, and federal authorities to take proactive measures to mitigate the effects of such disasters. These measures should include extensive public awareness campaigns for residents in flood-prone areas.

The Forum emphasizes that there is still time to prepare for these predictable events, even though they may be beyond human control. It reaffirms its call for adequate preparations by all concerned parties to minimize the devastating consequences experienced during the Mokwa floods.

ACF urges public emergency agencies, aid organizations, and others to stock essential resources to assist those in need, help vulnerable communities prepare, clear drainage systems, and repair related infrastructure. It also calls for strict enforcement of planning codes and environmental regulations.

Furthermore, the ACF appeals to citizens to observe sound environmental practices, adhere to laws and regulations, clear drainage and water channels, and avoid the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized places. May God Almighty continue to protect our people and communities from natural and human-induced calamities.
