Varsity Don slams WAEC Board over exams delay

From Godwin Agia, in Taraba
A university don, Prof. John Ajai, Thursday criticized the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the recent delay in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Citizenship Daily reports that students were forced to wait for up to 12-14 hours before sitting for their papers, with some exams starting as late as 10:00 pm.
Prof. Ajai described the situation as “a distressing failure” that puts the wellbeing and dignity of students at risk.
He questioned why WAEC insisted on going ahead with the exams despite the extraordinary delays and called for a transparent, independent investigation to determine the causes of the breakdown.
The varsity don emphasized that conducting exams deep into the night undermines the credibility of the entire process and damages public trust in the system.
He added that the situation sends the wrong message to students: that their time, health, and dignity are expendable.
Prof. Ajai demanded that everyone involved, from WAEC administrators to school managers and possibly security agencies, must be held accountable.
He stressed that a transparent investigation is necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future and restore public confidence in the education system
“Something deeply troubling is unfolding in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) administered by WAEC. Across the country, students who were scheduled to begin their exams at 8:00 a.m. have been forced to wait, some for up to 14 hours, before finally writing their papers late into the night, sometimes as late as 10:00 p.m. This is not just a scheduling error; it is a distressing failure that puts the wellbeing and dignity of our students at risk,” he said.
