The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin has extended scholarship to 300 students of Kano origin to study in Nigerian universities.
The scholarship offer was given via the Barau Jibrin Foundation.
Speaking at the screening and interview for the beneficiaries at the Bayero University Kano, BUK on Sunday, Jibrin said the scholarship programme is aimed at enhancing educational development and promoting higher education in the country.
According to him, he deemed it fit to sponsor indigenous Kano youth to study undergraduate and post-graduate courses on Artificial Intelligence, Robotic Science among other courses that would equip them to be productive to the country.
Barau, who had also sponsored some indigenous students for oversea scholarships, emphasized on fairness and transparency in the screening process.
“I urge the screening committee to conduct the exercise with fairness and transparency. Let those qualified be given the opportunity so that the aim of the programme would be achieved.
“I don’t know anyone of you here. I want this program to be based on eligibility, and i wish you good luck.
“We started this scholarship with sponsoring students overseas, and we expect them to come back and contribute their own input in the development of our dear state and the nation
“We want this screening to be fair and just without any form of partiality or favor,” he said.
Jibrin also thanked BUK for offering to hostin the screening exercise, saying the university’s leadership had been a role model in educational development.
Earlier in a remark, the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, commended the Senator’s foundation for its commitment to uplifting higher education in the state.
Professor Abbas described the scholarship programme as a noble intervention that would transform education in the state.
He said, “By training these students, it simply means you are preparing future leaders.”
He urged the beneficiaries to use the opportunity to achieve their stated goals.
