Crack operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, Benue state command, have arrested two suspects in connection to the the murder, allegedly, of an elderly woman accused of witchcraft.

The two, identified as 40 year-old Oyaje Clement and one Bako, said to be 50 years old, allegedly connived with others, still at large, to lynch the elderly woman in Egba village, Agatu council area of the state on December 24, after accusing her of practising witchcraft.

Command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, who made the disclosure in a statement, noted that both Bako and Oyaje are prime suspects in the troubling mob incident which resulted in the death of the unnamed old woman.

According to her, the incident is not only becoming rampant, it is also primarily targeted at hapless old individuals whom they accused of practising witchcraft.

“Another worrisome situation in the state is the case of people taking the law into their own hands, particularly young people killing the elderly for alleged case of witchcraft.

“On December 24, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., we received information about the killing of an aged woman over allegations of witchcraft in Egba village, Agatu LGA. Following investigations, two suspects were arrested in connection to the case,” Anene disclosed.

While urging the public to desist from such mob justice, she assured on the determination of the command to bring perpetrators to justice wherever they are hiding.
