The International Studies’ Alumni Association, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, will offer scholarships to 20 indigent students of the Department of Political Science and International Studies of the university.
The National President of the Association, Ambassador Muntari Kaita, disclosed this while briefing newsmen after a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, in his palace in Zaria at the weekend.
Kaita, according to a statement on Sunday by Alhaji Abdullahi Shuaib,
National PRO, International Studies Alumni Association, ABU Zaria, said the association’s executive committee and its Board of Trustees are currently working on the costing and other formalities for the award of the scholarship.
He said the scholarship would cover the cost of registration and tuition fees.
“We also discussing with the Department of Political Science and International Studies towards disbursing the funds to the beneficiaries early next year,” the President noted.
He said the association was also working to upgrade the department’s e-library to boost online learning and exchange of ideas.
According to him: “We are on course on this project, as we are going to install computers and other facilities, as well as renovate the e-library building.”
He said the association which consisted of seasoned diplomats, academicians, diplomatic journalists and other professionals had remained committed in addressing challenges facing the department and the university in general.
His words, “As part of the efforts of giving back to our Alma-Mater, some members of the association have indicated interest to offer lecture series to lecturers and students to enhance studies and also share our experiences.
“We are also discussing with the university on the modalities for the lectures as the lectures will be online.”Similarly, as part of our effort to enhance synergy, our members have donated hundreds of books and other literary works to the department,” Kaita stated.
The President appealed to the alumni of the university to always reconnect with the university towards improving support to ABU for better research and development initiatives. On the visit to the Emir, Kaita said the emir had numerously supported the association and attended its programmes, hence the decision to pay him a special visit to express appreciation.
Responding, the Emir who was former Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand praised the association for its contributions to enhancing academic activities and pledged his continuous support.
He encouraged other alumni associations and public spirited Nigerians to emulate such efforts, underscoring the importance of collaboration in uplifting academic standards in the country.
The Emir had served as the Royal Father of Day at the 1st Annual General Meeting/Public Lecture and Book Presentation of the
Association held at ABU Zaria last September.
