*Israel: it is ‘prize for terrorism’, will fuel ‘extemism’

By our correspondent

Three European countries, Ireland, Norway and Spain have formally recongnised the State of Palestine in line with their  collective resolve to so earlier in the month.

The three countries announced their decision today (Tuesday) as part of efforts to bring about lasting peace between Israel and Palestine and the Middle East by extension.

The three European countries also recognised East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state.

They condemned continued attack on Gaza, and accused Israel of breaching international laws in its war on Gaza.

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez said today after declaring Spain’s decision that it was not a move against any country or people.

Sanchez said It is the only way to bring peace for the two states to live side by side in peace.

An Al Jazeera respondent in Ireland said the recognition became imperative following public demand, students encampments and public protest demanding govt action.

He said steps were necessary towards peace in the Middle East.

Israel has already recalled its  Ambassadors from the three states, in protest, after they recognised palestinian state.

Israel foreign ministry said recognition of Palestinian state was ‘prize for terrorism’ and will fuel ‘extremism.’

So far, Palestine is now recognised by 146 countries around the world.

On may 10, 143, out of 149 General Assembly members already supported Palestinian state, excluding Israel and its ally, the US

The. The UN General Assembly recently voted massively to recognise Palestinian state but the US used its veto power to frustrate it.

Reactions from Palestine today shows mixed feelings as people are in pain over the relentless bombardments, although they embraced recognition as necessary only symbolic.

According to reports monitored today, while Palestinians are happy, they are also worried the attacks are going on unabated

They said Gaza is their homeland, while Israel is only an occupation force, and that the recognition was long overdue.

“The recognition shows we are not alone in our struggle for Justice, freedom and self determination,” a respondent told  Jazeera.
